To get people exploring again, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is collaborating with a motor home company in the state to give people a way to travel again without getting on a flight or taking a train.
MTDC is collaborating with Motohom to encourage people to go on roadtrips in campervans. In the middle of the pandemic, this kind of travel is especially attractive as you can do it without going to an airport or train station and getting on a mass transit vehicle, risking infection. Instead, you can rent a campervan and head out on your own, exploring the state at your own pace. It is equally useful for exploring parts of Maharashtra that don’t have a lot of tourism infrastructure. Just pull up at a scenic spot, and it becomes your bedroom.
WHAT FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE ON BOARD?
Motohom currently has two vehicles: a minivan designed for a party of one or two, and a traditional motorhome perfect for small families. The smaller vehicle comes with a repurposed trunk and rear passenger seat area that can be converted into a flatbed. Underneath it lies all the amenities you would need to cook a meal on the go. The vehicle also comes with a detachable living space that goes on the roof for extra room. The larger campervan has a small bedroom, a kitchen, a living room, bathroom and a “terrace” space on the roof of the vehicle. Both vehicles also come with a waste disposal system.

In addition, the vehicles feature GPS tracking to aid travellers in case of a breakdown, as well as front- and rear-mounted close circuit cameras for security. There is even a security siren on board that you can hit to ward off any potential danger. The vehicles also have an SOS button and are electronically limited to speeds of up to 90kmph.
HOW DO YOU BOOK IT?
You can book the vehicles directly on Motohom’s website. The smaller vehicle is currently available for Rs4,000/day, while the larger motorhome that comes with a driver and an attendant can be rented from Rs21,000/day. You can only rent these campervans to explore Maharashtra, as of now.
Alternatively, you can choose to invest in a campervan by leasing your vehicle to Motohom and paying a seed amount of Rs2,00,000. The company retrofits your vehicle to turn it into a campervan and pays you a monthly amount compounded with interest. During the agreed period, you can take the campervan out for two trips every year, in addition to a number of other benefits. At the end of this period, you get your vehicle back and your seed paid to you monthly with interest.
